Dating Again

He is in a booth; watching the door. His eyes reveal trepidation and excitement. Clean cut, freshly shaven, his fingers twitch . . . he takes a deep breath. It is hard to recognize her from the online photo and so often the photos are years old.

She is on her best behavior: casually dressed as much for her own comfort as to send a message. Her hair glistens. She knows that her smile is her best asset although the sparkle in her eye has been the subject of a paramour or two. Is that him? He keeps glancing at the door. We should have agreed on some kind of visual cue. One of us is going to have to be brave and just walk up.

“I wasn’t sure if that was you until you smiled.” He states rather too loud. “Would you like to eat outside? I think it is warm enough today.”

“That would be lovely. What a great place to meet.” She carefully inserts the word, ‘lovely’ as the book instructed her to. She plays with the nakedness on her left hand and wonders when the ghost of the simple band will finally disappear.
